At 4566m, Mount Meru is the fifth highest mountain on the African continent and the second highest in Tanzania. Towards the top of the mountain, the vegetation consists of heath and moorland and is then finally replaced by the stunning baron alpine deserts. As the flora changes the wildlife does so too, which is diverse and equally impressive. During the ascent, you will regularly come across large game such as elephants and buffalos but you may also come across leopards. Due to this, it is obligatory to be accompanied by an armed park ranger on your tour.

The Machame Route is one of the most beautiful trekking tours at the Kilimanjaro. The climb begins amongst thick rainforest vegetation, which offers occasional fantastic views of Mount Meru, Shire Ridge as well the main summit of the Kilimanjaro - the Kibo. The Machame Route contains more steep passages and higher altitudes than for example the Marangu or Rongai Routes and requires a more thorough preparation on behalf of the mountain climber.

The Marangu Route is perhaps the easiest and most comfortable route to reach the summit of Kilimanjaro. The route is well developed and the climb is constant and moderate. Only the approach to the summit is the exception; this being slightly more demanding. The accommodation on this tour is in simple mountain huts, which is an advantage as the nights can be very cold.

The lesser known Lemosho Route begins at Arusha on the western flank of the Kilimanjaro. The first 2 days of the tour crosses the thick rainforest belt as well as heath and moorland with many ferns and Erica’s along the way. The small trail sometimes has very steep passages and is scenically diverse. On the fifth day, the trail joins the Machame Route. In comparison to the Marangu and the Rongai Route, the Lemosho Route is more challenging. All nights are spent solely in tents.
